Integrative Medicine encompasses a collaboration of safe and appropriate modalities of diagnosis and treatment, including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, nutritional, environmental and lifestyle elements. The integrative medical practitioner focuses on patient education and participation in the individual healing process. Dr. Christenson is a renaissance integrative physician whose personal and professional approaches to health and healing respect the ancient wisdom of time-honored healing practices combined with the most relevant evidence-based protocols and technologies of contemporary medical science.
CHI Lifestyle Medical Center was established in 1994 to integrate allopathic, integrative and preventive medical modalities, as well as lifestyle management and health education counseling. For the next decade (1994-2004), CHI Lifestyle Medical Center was housed in a 120 year-old Victorian home in Maumee, Ohio, which was symbolic of traditional philosophies, while incorporating state-of-the-art science and technology. Renovations included medical and technical equipment, full-spectrum lighting, Feng-Shui design to enhance the flow of vibrational energy, therapeutic sound with harp music to promote relaxation and well-being and therapeutic chromatics in the choice of soothing and refreshing colors.
In May, 2004, CHI Lifestyle Medical Center relocated to one of the beautiful valleys of the Ko’olau Mountain Range on the island of Oahu, in Kailua, Hawaii. The combined residence and clinical setting was redecorated with a similar Feng Shui setup, but, accentuated with the exquisite exterior beauty of Hawaii’s fresh mountain air, the sound of water streams, and year-round spring-like seasonal energy of regeneration.
This is a quintessential location for establishing a landmark center for integrative, regenerative and aesthetic medical treatment options and educational outreach to the medical community and the general public. A main emphasis of CHI Lifestyle Medical Center is to generate professional awareness of the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and western allopathy, as well as coaching for graduate medical students. Dr. Christenson has taught over a decade of rotations for senior medical students in Integrative, Complementary and East Asian Medicine at John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii.
CHI Lifestyle Medical Center promotes the philosophy that patients are ultimately responsible for their own health, and the patient and the doctor are partners in health care management. Dr. Christenson works closely with each patient, allowing quality time to serve individual needs. All new patients are required to fill out a comprehensive health questionnaire. This gives each person a chance to review their medical history as well as emotional influences. Healing begins from within the person’s understanding of their own life choices. At CHI Lifestyle Medical Center, a custom-designed program for each patient incorporates various therapeutic processes and quality time with Dr. Christenson as a personal health consultant and guide.
The majority of patients who visit CHI Lifestyle Medical Center have already invested years of experience with the conventional allopathic diagnostic tools, pharmaceuticals and surgical interventions, without satisfactory results. During the initial visit, after a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s medical history, Dr. Christenson investigates the possible causes of degenerative illnesses, including factors impacting emotional balance. Most patients have experienced psycho-emotional trauma, but, unknowingly have internalized it, and have not connected the traumatic issues with physical disorders.
Pain or loss of function becomes a physical expression of a deep-seated trauma which can cause metabolic disturbances through chronic inflammation or undetected nutritional deficiencies resulting in fibromyalgia, insomnia, depression, migraine headaches, back pain, TMJ, hormonal imbalances, cardiovascular issues, arthritis, etc. Dr. Christenson works with each patient to identify the underlying integrated causes at the root of the physical disorders, as well as, the physiological aspects. Once the psycho-emotional issues are connected with the physical disorders and a healthcare program is initiated with combined treatments, most patients find sustainable relief and do not progress to critical care.
During the initial visit, Dr. Christenson also discusses the theories, philosophies and techniques of energetic medicine involving the meridian system and the medical acupuncture treatment protocol and acupressure options. Additional information is given on life-style modification techniques, including dietary recommendations and self-education options on healthy living habits. One of CHI Lifestyle Medical Center’s goals is to educate, rather than merely, medicate. The term “doctor” derived from the classical Latin, “docere”, meaning teacher. Dr. Christenson is an advocate for teaching patients about health and healing, as much as, treating them. CHI Lifestyle Medical Center patients are encouraged to become self-motivated and intelligent about a lifetime of health and healing practices.
