The biggest buzz word in healthcare is “stress”.  Hospitals all boost stress reduction seminars and classes; health spas sign up members for anti-stress massages and stress relieving foot and hand reflexology. Meditation centers teach students how to de-stress their lives through centering, deep breathing and special postures.

It is a well known fact in medicine that stress, or more accurately, distress, promotes and exacerbates most illnesses and delays or impedes the healing process.

Knowing how to recognize the essential stress triggers in our lives and how to remodel our perception of stress is key to managing the effects of stress and moving forward toward a more stress-free lifestyle. As an example, if someone perceives lack of time as a major stress, then choosing what is a genuine priority and deserves more time than other issues, will help to define how time is best spent. If everything is a priority, then nothing is a priority.

Since stress seems to be the middle name of modern society, CHI Lifestyle Medical Center in Kailua endeavors to create an atmosphere of harmony, serenity and relaxation. Dr. Christenson is well versed in the ancient technique of feng shui and artfully has designed the center to reflect these stress relieving attributes. Everything has been carefully chosen for its capacity to set a mood of calm and healing, from the beautiful mountain view Hawaiian vista surroundings to the garden setting to the soothing sounds of the therapeutic harp.  Unlike cold, caustic sterile environments, CHI Lifestyle Medical Center is inviting and invigorating. Although not a hospital, the center is innately hospitable.

Taking into consideration various aspects of stress induced conditions, Dr. Christenson
has treatment protocols for stressed out soccer moms to burned out executives to veterans and victims with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). A specific stress relief technique that is fpundational to Dr. Christenson’s protocol is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique.)

EFT is a powerful self-help method that merges elements of cognitive and exposure therapies with acupressure in the form of fingertip tapping on 12 acupuncture points The process starts by putting oneself in a negative emotional state – for example, by recalling a traumatic event from your past or by thinking about a current situation that upsets you. This triggers your body’s stress response.

Next, use the fingertips to tap on 12 specific acupuncture points. Tapping create an electric charge that travels through the body’s connective tissues along the path of least resistance. When a traumatic memory is recalled, tapping sends a message of safety to the body that neutralizes the emotionally arousing memory. Tapping soothes the body’s stress response. It creates new neural pathways that promote calmness in the face of negative emotions.

EFT rapidly reduces the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. Once the distress is gone, the body knows how to re-balance itself, and accelerate healing.

Although each stress induces its unique symptom profile, treatments involve a similar process as for pain relief:

  • Identifying stress triggers
  • Defining causative factors
  • Providing stress relief herbal and nutraceutical formulas
  • Using acupuncture to unblock stagnated energy points
  • Teaching patients how to refresh their physical, mental and emotional aspects
  • Developing individual regimens to help each patient be in charge of their healing
  • Choosing EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and NAET (Allergy Elimination Technique) to help eliminate stress reactions by eliminating the stressors.
